When the weapon was discovered at a security checkpoint, the 64-year-old actor said he had forgotten the .22-caliber handgun was in his luggage, police said.

"I apologize to anyone and everyone that I have caused any embarrassment or inconvenience to," the 64-year-old actor said in a statement. "It is my own stupidity to find myself in this embarrassing situation."

Farina was booked on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, said Sgt. Dennis Beacham. Bail was set at $25,000 before police discovered the weapon was not registered.

Charges were upgraded to a felony because the weapon wasn't registered.

The one-time "Law and Order" star, who co-stars in the new Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz comedy "What Happens in Vegas," has also starred in such films as "Snatch" and "Get Shorty."

The actor is also a former Chicago police officer.
