NCAA Game Summary - Stanford Vs. Texas

POSTED: 10:14 pm PDT March 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - D.J. Augustin recorded 23 points, five rebounds and seven assists as Texas used a late surge to top Stanford and roll into the Elite Eight with a 82-62 victory in the South Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Damion James had 18 points for the Longhorns (31-6), who square off against top-seeded Memphis on Sunday. A.J. Abrams added 12 points and Connor Atchley picked up 10.

"I really thought it was really a terrific team win," said Texas head coach Rick Barnes. Not only the job that the five guys that have been there doing it all year for us, but the minutes that our bench gave us by coming in, putting our bodies on their inside post players, because we know how good they are and how hard they are to defend."

Brook Lopez posted game-highs with 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (28-8), who shot just under 34 percent from the floor. Landry Fields was the only other starter in double figures with 11 points. Mitch Johnson picked up six points and dished out a game-best eight assists in defeat.

After seeing Stanford climb within a point, the Longhorns were shocked back to attention, and effectively wrapped up the game with a 16-2 run. Abrams' jumper with 12:01 to play began the rush, and James' slam ended it with 5:15 left for a 68-53 advantage.

A Fields free throw broke the string, but Augustin ignited another game- finishing 14-9 burst to wrap up Texas' trip to the regional finals.

"Coach just told us to go back to how we play defense, Texas basketball and that's what we did," said Augustin of the game-deciding push. "Our big men did a great job of rebounding and kicking it out on fast break. It was all the defense; put a lot of credit on our defense tonight."

Texas began the contest with a 10-4 run, then an Augustin three pushed their lead to 15-8 just before the midway point of the half. Stanford climbed within four as Lopez caught fire, but Texas went ahead by eight on an Augustin layup with 4:55 to go.

The Longhorn advantage reached as high as 12 points late, before a three by Johnson pulled Stanford within nine at the break.

Johnson nailed another trey to start the second half and bring the Cardinal to 43-37, but Texas turned around and pushed their lead back up to 10 on an easy Augustin deuce two minutes later.

Thanks to seven straight points from Lopez, Stanford was able to close the gap to 48-44 a little less than four minutes in, then Fields came up with a big three to pull Stanford within 52-51 with 12:54 to play.

Unfortunately, Stanford could not sustain the momentum and saw the game slip out of their hands down the stretch.

"I don't know what really happened," admitted Lopez. "Started turning over the ball a bit more, getting more careless with the ball, and I don't think we were going after loose balls or crashing the boards as much."

Game Notes:

Texas has won two of the three meetings between the two clubs...Justin Mason led the Longhorns with eight rebounds...Johnson shot a dismal 2-for-10 from the floor, both makes from beyond the arc...Texas hit for 49.2 percent (32- of-65) from the field.
