Academy Unveils 'Quotable' Oscar Poster

Quotes Highlighted From Best Picture, Screenplay Nominees

POSTED: 2:00 pm PST December 19, 2006

This year's poster for the Academy Awards has Oscar saying, "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

That quote from the Oscar-winning film "Network" is one of dozens on the official poster for the celebration, unveiled by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Tuesday in Los Angeles.

According to the Motion Picture Academy, all but one of the lines highlighted in the poster have received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Writing, or both, between 1936 and 2005.

Among the famous sayings on the poster are "Rosebud," from "Citizen Kane," "I coulda been a contender" from "On the Waterfront," "Frodo!" from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse," from "The Godfather" and "Show me the money!" from "Jerry Maguire."

"They are the unforgettable lines that you hear in everyday conversations, in meetings, at parties, or walking down the street," Sid Ganis, president of the Motion Picture Academy, said in statement. "They tap into what we think and give us great shorthand ways to express how we feel about those things. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then each quote is worth at least 500."

Other quotes on the poster include "E.T. phone home," from "E.T. the Extraterrestrial," "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" from "The Shining," "They call me Mr. Tibbs!" from "In the Heat of the Night," "Greed is good" from "Wall Street" and "You can't handle the truth" from "A Few Good Men."

The poster was created for the Academy by TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles and the Oscar statuette was photographed by Albert Watson. A total of 65,000 copies of the poster will be available worldwide.

The nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 23. The ceremony is set for Feb. 25. Ellen DeGeneres has been tapped to host.
