Griffin died Tuesday at his home in Franklin, Tenn., according to funeral home officials.

His guitar work and harmonies complimented singer David Gates' vocals on many of Bread's singles.

Bread recorded several hits in the 1970s, including "If," "Everything I Own," "Make It With You," "It Don't Matter to Me," "Diary" and "Lost Without Your Love."

Griffin and Gates later clashed over who should write Bread's singles. Griffin left the band in 1973 but rejoined the group in 1976.

Griffin won an Oscar for Best Original Song for co-writing The Carpenters' hit "For All We Know," featured in "Lovers and Other Strangers," a romantic comedy starring Bea Arthur, Diane Keaton, Cloris Leachman and Bonnie Bedelia.

His funeral is scheduled for Friday in Nashville.
