Bay Area 'American Idol' hopeful took advice from her cat

OAKLAND (KTVU) – San Francisco teenager Katherine Skinner says her cat is a bit of a psychic.

So when the 16-year-old was considering whether or not to try out for "American Idol," it was her 19-year-old cat Moustafa that gave her the final nudge to go the local tryouts.

"Yes, Moustafa the psychic cat – he's my biggest inspiration," she said.

Skinner has a big, gritty voice that earned her a trip to Hollywood for Thursday night's show. She says her musical idols include classic rocker Pat Benatar, the late Freddie Mercury and David Bowie.

She even claims she got her knee-length fur "pimp coat" from Bowie in the 70's.

When asked how that can be possible, she chuckles and says – "I have a time machine."

Skinner said she's learned a great deal from her 'Idol' experience.

"One of the most important things is just stepping back," she said. "Sometime hitting a song super hard is not the best approach. Like for me, I'm really big (voiced). I like to rock out. Sometimes taking a step back is more subtle."
