In this seminar, we are exploring two technologies in mobile healthcare, which address rural healthcare in the underdeveloped countries for women care and the home care. Presentation #1---PartoPen: Paper-based systems for monitoring maternal labor have been shown to reduce life-threatening complications in low-resource environments; however, significant barriers exist to the use of these tools in developing countries. This presentation will introduce the PartoPen---a digital pen system that enhances the partograph---a common labor-monitoring form. The PartoPen system provides real-time data feedback and reinforces birth attendant training, while retaining the paper-and-pen interface currently used by most healthcare workers. In this presentation, the results from a preliminary user evaluation, and two pilot studies of the system in Kenya will be discussed. The qualitative and quantitative results collected in these studies suggest that the PartoPen system effectively addresses many of the current barriers facing effective partograph use in developing countries. The presentation will conclude with a demonstration and a participatory activity using the PartoPen system. Presentation #2---CaptureProof CaptureProof aims to empower patients with a clear yet asynchronous communication tool documenting their health in relation to time. It is for all the events that happen outside of the doctor's office that you want the doctor to SEE. It allows the comfort of clear communication---and changes the time spent with the doctor from trying to use words to explaining a problem that is visual---such as a color or movement with an image or video. This allows the precious moments spent with the doctor focusing on the plan of action/solution/steps to better health, as opposed to trying to get your point across---and assume the doctor understands. It is a clear empowerment tool to better health! Conroy will demonstrate the technology of CaptureProof and talk about the various studies that CP is conducting. She will discuss CaptureProof's short and long term goals for positively impacting medicine. Speakers: - Heather Underwood, PhD Candidate, ATLAS Institute University of Colorado Boulder. - Meghan Conroy, CEO and Founder of CaptureProof.
