Chautauqua was formerly a type of historical entertainment and education that flourished in the 19th century. It gets its name from one town of its origin, chautauqua, NY. Today it is an entertaining, interactive format in which a scholar/performer portrays an historical figure in a three-part format, with or without music. In part 1 this Dr. Bibbs (as Pleasant) gives a biographical monologue in character that represents landmark research on Pleasant's views and words. It has been received with acclaim internationally. After intermission, the audience questions the character about the monologue. And then, after a drum solo by Ghanian master drummer Pope Fllyne, the audience questions the scholar (Dr. Bibbs) out of costume to discern the truth about the character’s story according to research. It is fun, participatory history. Pianist/composer Jacqueline Hairston accompanies the evening on piano. The score contains period song and spirituals. It is fun, participatory history.
