A modern-day Caravagista (an artist freely inspired by and a successor of the Baroque master Caravaggio), Cretara's work is anything but old-fashioned. His scenes of everyday life and objects are a search for beauty and the transformations of light that reveal an extraordinary compassion and insight into the human face and body, and that makes ordinary things look as deeply odd and endearing as they often are.
