OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KTVU) - A four-year-old dog was full of surprises. Twenty-one of them, in fact. Dovey Rogers is an adorable 41-pound Shar-Pei that had a hankering for pacifiers.
She recently underwent surgery to have all 21 pacifiers that were “stacked up on each other in the stomach” removed. Chris Rispoli, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Gentle Care Animal Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, said it’s the craziest surgery he’s ever done.
Rispoli has been caring for Dovey since she was a pup. And when Dovey was brought into see him on Wednesday for an apparent illness, Rispoli was shocked and concerned by her appearance. She had lost a considerable amount of weight in a short period of time. Discussions led to an unusual announcement.
"Dad said grandma had seen her jump up on the counter and grab one of the baby's pacifiers,” Rispoli said. “He said they had been missing a lot of pacifiers."
Dovey knew right where all those missing pacifiers were. The family was in utter disbelief when they received the news. “They were pretty stunned,” Rispoli said. “Because we thought there were seven to nine in there, and then I pulled out 21.”
The surgery went well and Dovey has since returned home. She’s expected to start putting some weight back on, her skin will go back to normal and she’ll start feeling a whole lot better.
Rispoli reminds folks that dogs will eat virtually anything and the best practice to avoid situations like this is to simply put things away.
