Three Cheers For Beer!

Posted: 8:31 am PDT September 7, 2006

Apparently, Americans are big into small.

Sales of craft beer, the product of small, artisan breweries found in neighborhoods across the country, saw an 11 percent growth in the first half of 2006 compared to the same period in 2005, according to the Brewers Association, a nonprofit group that keeps taps, er, tabs on such things.

“The rate of growth in the craft-beer segment appears to be accelerating,” said Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association professional division. “This is the third straight year we’ve seen an increase in the craft-beer growth rate.”

This was the first time since 1996 that the growth has been in double digits, according to the organization. A decade ago, however, the growth represented breweries opening at an accelerated rate. This time, Brewers Association folks said, the growth comes from established craft breweries.

A recent report also generated from the Brewers Association indicates that on average, each American lives within 10 miles of a craft brewery, further illustrating the public's propensity to quaff artisan ales and lagers.

“The current trend in craft-beer sales increases demonstrates a growing consumer preference for the diverse and flavorful beers made by craft brewers,” said Gatza.

And Gallup has proof of Gatza's statement: A recent survey by the venerable pollsters showed that beer was once again on top among American imbibers.

According to the survey, nearly half -- 41 percent -- of American adults surveyed said they drink beer more often than wine or spirits.

Wine was down from a similar survey last year, at 33 percent in 2006 compared to 39 percent in 2005. Twenty-three percent of those polled this year said they choose liquor as their adult beverage of choice.

Gallup found 64 percent of those polled drink alcoholic beverages, a figure that has changed little over time. Gallup has tracked American drinking habits since 1939.

Just a few more reasons to raise your glass to craft beer. Cheers!
