Astros Send Geary To DL

POSTED: 6:20 pm PDT May 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Houston Astros placed right-handed reliever Geoff Geary on the 15-day disabled list Friday due to a strained right groin.

The injury is said to have occurred in the eighth inning of Thursday's 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Astros have called up Fernando Nieve from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the vacancy in the bullpen.

Geary is 1-1 with a 1.47 earned run average in 19 appearances this season. The 31-year-old had not allowed a run in his last 10 cameos on the mound.

The 25-year-old Nieve was 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA in nine games, including seven starts, for Round Rock. He also struck out 33 batters and walked only 10 in 33 2/3 innings.
