Phillies Try To Get Brooms Out In Atlanta

(Sports Network) - Atlanta's solid play at home this year hasn't carried over when Philadelphia comes to town. The Braves will try to avoid getting swept at Turner Field for the second straight time by the National League East-rival Phillies with their hottest pitcher on the mound tonight, when the two clubs wrap their three-game series.

Atlanta entered this set 28-14 as the home club, but have dropped the first two tests by a 15-6 margin. The Braves, who now trail the Phillies by six games in the division standings, have been staying afloat this year by dominating at home, seeing as they are 12-29 as the road club this season.

The Phillies continue to have the Braves' number at Turner Field this year. The club has won all five of its games in Atlanta after sweeping a three-game set from June 6-8, and has won seven of eight versus the Braves overall in 2008.

However, Philadelphia faces a tough matchup tonight in Jair Jurrjens, who makes his first career start versus the Phillies. The right-hander has won his last three decisions and hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 23 2/3 innings.

That includes Friday, when he gave up just three hits -- all singles -- against the Blue Jays over eight shutout innings, improving to 8-3 with a 2.94 earned run average on the season. Atlanta is 11-5 in Jurrjens' 16 starts this year and the 22-year-old is a perfect 5-0 in eight home starts this season with a 2.49 ERA.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, is trying to put a miserable June behind them, a month in which it lost 11 of its last 14 before flipping the calendar. The Phillies have scored 31 runs over their past five games (3-2) after posting just 15 over their previous eight.

The Phillies jumped out to an early five-run lead in last night's 7-3 victory. Chris Coste had an RBI double in the second inning, Ryan Howard hit a three- run homer in the third frame and Pat Burrell added a solo shot in the fifth.

Howard, though, made two errors in the bottom of the ninth that allowed the Braves to eventually load the bases with two outs. Mark Teixeira took an offering from Phils closer Brad Lidge deep but foul before striking out to end the game.

Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has won three of four and is 4-4 on a nine-game road trip. The Phillies also lead the Marlins by 1 1/2 games in the NL East.

Cole Hamels will move up a day to pitch in the place of Opening Day starter Brett Myers, who was sent to Triple-A on Tuesday to work out of his slump. Hamels will still be working on five days rest, though, due to the Phillies off day on Monday.

The left-hander defeated Texas on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out eight while lasting at least seven frames for the fifth straight start. The victory improved Hamels to 8-5 with a 3.38 ERA this year.

The 24-year-old posted his first career shutout when he faced Atlanta on May 15, holding the club to four hits and two walks while fanning six. Hamels is 4-2 in his career versus the Braves with a 3.59 ERA in seven starts.

Chipper Jones, who homered in last night's game, is 3-for-9 (.333) in his career against Hamels with two homers and three RBI. Teixeira, meanwhile, is 1-for-7 (.143) against him.

Jones played in his second straight game after missing eight in a row due to a strained right quadriceps. He leads the majors with a .391 batting average.

Ruben Gotay also hit a home run yesterday for the Braves, who have dropped four straight. Jorge Campillo (3-3) was touched for eight hits and five runs in five frames with no strikeouts and two walks for Atlanta.
