Burrell's Blast Gives Phils Win Over D-Backs

Sunday, July 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Pat Burrell hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies scored six straight runs to rally past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Pedro Feliz went 3-for-4 with a homer for the Phillies, who enter the All-Star break with four wins in their last five games. Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, and the Phillies (52-43) locked up sole possession of first place in the National League East at the break. They are a half-game ahead of the New York Mets, winners of nine in a row.

Ryan Madson (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning to earn the win in relief of Cole Hamels, who allowed just two runs on a career-high 11 hits in seven innings. Hamels struck out eight and helped himself at the plate with an RBI double.

Chad Tracy went 2-for-4 and homered for the D-Backs, who lost three of five and reached the All-Star Break atop the NL West despite a 47-48 record. Orlando Hudson and Stephen Drew each had a pair of hits, while Chris Burke went 3-for-4.

Chad Qualls (2-7) allowed four runs in one-third of an inning and lost in relief of Brandon Webb, who allowed two runs on seven hits in seven frames -- striking out six without allowing a walk.

With the game tied 2-2, Chase Utley led off against Qualls in the eighth with a single to center, and Ryan Howard followed with a base hit to left. Burrell then reached down and smashed a 2-2 Qualls slider into the seats in left to put the Phils on top. One out later, Feliz smashed a liner to left that barely cleared the fence to extend the lead to 6-2.

Arizona picked up a run off Brad Lidge in the bottom of the ninth when Hudson singled in Emilio Bonifacio, but Lidge struck out Mark Reynolds to finish off the win.

The D-Backs picked up an early 1-0 lead in the second when Tracy turned on a Hamels fastball and deposited it into the seats in right. Two innings later, Arizona tacked on another run with a two-out flurry. Chris Young bunted for a single, and Burke smashed a grounder to third for an infield single before Robby Hammock brought in Young with a single to left.

Webb made easy work of the Phils until the fifth, when Feliz ripped a leadoff single and one out later Hamels lined an RBI double into the gap in right- center. Webb then hit Rollins on the knee, but escaped with the lead in tact.

Arizona had a chance to add on an insurance run with runners on first and second and one out in the seventh, but a bizarre play kept them off the board. Hudson smoked a line drive to right off Geoff Jenkins' glove then off the wall, but Drew inexplicably held at third and Hudson -- who fell down between first and second -- was ran down and retired when he wandered out of the basepath. Hamels then caught Mark Reynolds looking to escape the inning.

The break gave the Phillies a chance to knot the game up in the home half. Chris Coste broke an 0-for-22 slump with a leadoff single, and one out later Rollins roped a double down the line in right to plate pinch-runner Carlos Ruiz with the tying run.

Game Notes
