San Diego Padres (54-88) At Milwaukee Brewers (82-60), 2:05 P.m.
(Sports Network) - Southpaw Manny Parra continues a breakout season in his first full year in the major leagues today when the Milwaukee Brewers host the San Diego Padres to close out a four-game series at Miller Park. Parra, a 26th-round draft choice in 2001, reached the big leagues with nine appearances in 2007, making two starts and going 0-1 with a 3.76 earned run average in 26 1/3 innings of work. He's been sold throughout 28 appearances -- 27 starts -- as a full-time member of the staff this season, though he's slumped to just two wins in his last 10 starts since early July. Parra has earned a pair of no-decisions since his last win, which came on August 20, when he beat Houston, 5-2. In 16 appearances -- 15 starts -- at Miller Park in 2008, he is 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 88 innings. For San Diego, injury-riddled righty Chris Young makes start No. 2 following his latest trip to the disabled list. Young did not pitch between August 10 and September 1 after sustaining a strained right forearm, a malady that followed the fractured skull he suffered after being hit by a line drive from Albert Pujols on May 21 against St. Louis. He was out more than two months before coming back and making three starts -- getting three no-decisions while allowing 12 hits and nine runs in 14 1/3 innings -- before sustaining the forearm injury after a Monday meeting with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In that game, a 5-2 loss, he allowed six hits and four runs in five innings. He got a no-decision in his lone career start against Milwaukee, allowing two hits and two runs in six innings. On Saturday, Ben Sheets pitched a complete game to outduel Padres ace Jake Peavy, as Milwaukee edged San Diego, 1-0. Sheets (13-7) showed no ill effects after tweaking a left groin muscle, forcing him to leave his last start, giving up just five hits and walking one with seven strikeouts. The righty won for just the third time in his last 11 starts after a 10-2 beginning to the season. Prince Fielder doubled in the game's lone run for Milwaukee, which won its second in a row. The Brewers pushed their lead in the wild card standings to 4 1/2 games over Philadelphia, which had its game with the Mets postponed due to rain from Tropical Storm Hanna. Milwaukee also remained four games back of the first- place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Chicago outslugged the Reds, 14-9, later Saturday. Peavy (9-10), winless in his last four starts, was outmatched by Sheets but was nearly as perfect, allowing just one run on five hits, while walking four and striking out five in seven innings of work. Luis Rodriguez had three of San Diego's five hits as the Padres dropped their fifth game in the last six. Chase Headley had the other two hits. Milwaukee won twice in three tries against the Padres last month and is 6-2 over the last eight meetings between these clubs.
