White Sox Pound Giants To Complete Sweep
Sunday, May 18, 2008
San Francisco, CA -- (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher stroked a pinch-hit three- run double in the eighth inning to put the White Sox ahead for good and Chicago scored four times in the ninth inning for a 13-8 win over San Francisco, completing a three-game sweep.Orlando Cabrera hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs for the White Sox, winners of five in a row. Carlos Quentin and Joe Crede homered, and Brian Anderson also had two RBI as Chicago pounded out a season-high 15 hits. Matt Thornton (1-0) threw two-thirds of an inning to get the victory and Nick Masset pitched the final two frames for his first career save. Ray Durham had three hits and two RBI for the Giants, losers of five in a row. Jose Castillo and Bengie Molina also drove in two runs. Tyler Walker (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four hits and three runs in one inning. Matt Cain surrendered six hits, including four homers, and six runs over seven innings in the start, although he had a no-hitter after four innings. Castillo singled in Randy Winn in the seventh and then scored on a Molina double to tie the game at 6-6, but Walker imploded in the eighth. Paul Konerko, Crede and Alexei Ramirez singled with one out. Anderson then fanned before Swisher blooped a hit tight to the line in left. Dan Ortmeier failed to get to the ball in time and he then fell over the bullpen mound, as all three runners came home. "I got a first pitch strike called on me and after that I was just thinking to myself, don't try and hit it hard, just try and float it somewhere," Swisher said. "I got lucky and found some grass out there." The Giants loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with nobody out, thanks to wildness from Octavio Dotel, who walked three batters. The first batter Masset faced, Castillo, hit a ground ball to Crede, but his throw to second pulled Ramirez off the base and a run scored. Durham then beat out a potential double play ball for another run, but Steve Holm then grounded into an inning- ending double play. "We have a golden opportunity there in the eighth and then we got a little too aggressive at the plate, swinging at the pitcher's pitch," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Jermaine Dye singled in A.J. Pierzynski, Crede lifted a sacrifice fly and Anderson's base hit scored two more in the ninth. John Danks was charged with six hits and three runs over six innings in the start for the White Sox. Rich Aurilia homered in the bottom of the second inning before Crede finally ended an 0-for-13 string by White Sox hitters to start the game with a blast over the left field wall. Durham singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Cabrera led of the sixth with a homer to left-center, and after Pierzynski singled, Quentin belted one over the fence in left for a 4-2 difference. Ortmeier's groundout plated Aaron Rowand in the sixth before Cabrera homered with Jim Thome on base in the seventh. Game Notes The White Sox start a three-game series at home against the Indians Tuesday, while the Giants are on the road for their next nine, beginning with three at Colorado on Monday...This was the third multi-homer game of Cabrera's career...Cain matched a career-high with four homers allowed.
