Marlins' Mitre Shelved For Season

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Florida Marlins pitcher Sergio Mitre underwent ligament replacement "Tommy John" surgery, ending his 2008 season.

The 27-year-old Mitre experienced right forearm tightness in Spring Training and was placed on the disabled list. His recovery is expected to last 12-18 months, meaning Mitre may miss all or parts of the 2009 season as well.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama.

Mitre is 10-23 lifetime with a 5.35 earned run average in 78 games, including 52 starts for the Cubs and Marlins.
