Toronto, ON -- (Sports Network) - A.J. Burnett was brilliant on the hill, and Marco Scutaro blasted a three-run homer as Toronto downed New York, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Rogers Centre. In the midst of persistent trade rumors and on just three days rest, Burnett (10-8) was nearly untouchable, surrendering one run on six hits in 8 1/3 innings. The flame-thrower walked one and fanned eight. "I felt like I helped my team out a little bit," Burnett said. "I always wanted to see what it would be like to be in a four-man rotation like way back in the day and it's good to see I came out with a good performance." Scott Rolen added an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who have won five of their past six games and are 47-48 entering the All-Star break. Kevin Mench was 2- for-3 with a pair of doubles. Jason Giambi homered in the ninth inning for the Yankees, who have dropped three of their last four games and enter the All-Star break with a 50-45 mark. Bobby Abreu was 2-for-4 with a double for New York, which is six games behind first-place Boston at the break. "When you're 0-1 and 0-2 the whole time, he's (Burnett) throwing the ball at 93-96, he's got a great curveball, it's not an easy guy to be behind," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Andy Pettitte (10-7) allowed four runs -- all in the second inning -- on eight hits in six innings of work. The veteran left-hander walked just one and struck out six. The Jays jumped all over Pettitte with four runs in the second. Mench led off the frame by slicing a double over the head of Abreu in right and Rolen followed with an RBI single. After Adam Lind drew a walk, Scutaro turned on a low fastball and drove it over the wall in left for his third homer of the year. "The pitch wasn't going to be a strike, Scutaro went down and got it and lifted it," Pettitte said. Toronto had a chance to blow things open in the fourth. With runners at the corners and nobody out, Scutaro flied out to Abreu and the right fielder subsequently gunned down Rolen at the plate for a double play that stemmed the Blue Jays momentum. The Yankees couldn't take advantage, however, and never seriously threatened until the ninth inning. After Burnett got Alex Rodriguez on a fly out to start the inning, Giambi spoiled the shutout by taking the flame-thrower the opposite way for his 19th homer of the season. Jorge Posada followed with a single to right and Jays manager Cito Gaston pulled the plug on Burnett. Closer B.J. Ryan earned his 18th save of the year by promptly inducing Robinson Cano to ground into a 6-4-3 twin-killing to end the game. "He (Burnett) pitched a great ball game," Gaston said. "Scutaro got a big hit for us and the guys played good defense. It was a team effort today to win, and that's what we did." Game Notes Burnett is now 5-2 versus the Yankees in his career...Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was 0-for-4, snapping a 10-game hitting streak...New York still holds a 5-4 edge in this year's season series with Toronto.
