Report: Yankees Sign Richie Sexson

Thursday, July 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees have reportedly reached an agreement with Richie Sexson, the first baseman who was released by the Seattle Mariners last week.

According to the New York Post, Sexson will receive the prorated amount of $161,000 for the remainder of the season. The troubled slugger was in the midst of his fourth season with the Mariners but the club opted to release him following a front office shakeup in mid-June that included the firing of then general manager Bill Bavasi.

The 33-year-old Sexson saw his career flourish while with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2001, he hit 45 home runs with 125 RBI and two years later also hit 45 homers. Following an injury-plagued 2004 season with Arizona, Bavasi lured him to Seattle, where he shined in his first season with 39 homers and 121 runs batted in and followed that with a solid 34-homer campaign in '06.

However, in 2007 he hit 21 homers and watched his batting average plummet to .205. When he got off to a similar start this year, the new brass had seen enough and placed him on waivers -- he and his $14 million salary.

New York hopes that Sexson's presence in the lineup against left-handed pitchers will be of service to the club. In 74 games this season, Sexson hit .344 against lefties. He could play an important platoon role at first base with Jason Giambi. He will reportedly start on Saturday versus Oakland.
