Rangers Go For Sweep In Anaheim
(Sports Network) - Joe Saunders goes for win No. 17 this afternoon, as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play their final tune up before the postseason, trying to salvage the finale of their three-game series in the final regular season game of the year at Angel Stadium. The Angels, though, haven't been swept at home since June 25-27, 2007 against Kansas City, while the Rangers haven't swept three games in Anaheim since June 28-30, 1999. Saunders will try to avoid that, as he tries to win his third straight decision. Saunders hasn't pitched since September 18 when he defeated Oakland to improve to 16-7, while lowering his earned run average to 3.52. The 27-year-old lefty has faced the Rangers six times, posting a 2-3 mark to go along with a 5.45 ERA. Los Angeles was once again denied its 100th win of the season on Saturday, as Nelson Cruz launched a two-run homer, leading Texas to an 8-4 victory. Joaquin Arias went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Chris Davis also homered for the Rangers, who have won four straight. Hank Blalock hit an RBI double in the third, giving the Rangers the most doubles in a single season in major league history. Texas came into the game with 373 doubles -- tied with three other teams, including the 2004 Boston Red Sox -- and tallied two on Saturday to set the record at 375 with one game remaining. Scott Feldman (6-8) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits in six innings, with two strikeouts, to earn the win for Texas. Ervin Santana (16-7) struggled in his final start for the Angels before the playoffs, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, with a walk and five strikeouts. Juan Rivera went 2-for-4 and scored twice, and Erick Aybar finished 2-for-3 for the Angels, who have clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and will face the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the postseason. Texas hands the ball to veteran righty Kevin Millwood, who is 9-9 with a 5.03 ERA. Millwood is winless since August 31 and did not get a decision in his last start on Monday against Oakland, which reached him for three runs (two earned) and eight hits in seven innings of his team's 4-3 loss. Millwood defeated the Halos the last time he faced them and is 3-3 lifetime against them with a 3.61 ERA in 10 starts. The Angels are 11-7 against Texas so far this season but have dropped five of the nine matchups between the divisional foes in Anaheim. However, since the start of the 2005 campaign, the Rangers are just 13-24 at Angel Stadium.
