LIVERMORE, Calif. (KTVU) - New toll lanes opened Friday morning on a heavily used freeway in the Tri Valley area.
Two new express lanes opened Friday morning and it should be a tremendous help during the afternoon commute for people who use 580.
The three new lanes stretch for 14 miles from Dublin through Livermore and they operate from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On Monday morning, one westbound lane opens and that will make a difference for the morning commute.
The lanes are free for those who carpool, are in clean air vehicles, buses or on motorcycles.
But you need to get a FasTrak flex toll tag and that lets you designate if you're carpooling so you won't be charged.
Solo drivers will pay a toll to use the new lanes, and the fee depends on the congestion.
Transportation officials know it may take some time for drivers to adjust to the changes.
The change may initially cause delays with drivers slowing down because they're confused. But there's a lot of signs up to help inform drivers.
