San Francisco police Sgt. helps buy school supplies for students

Back to school shopping is gearing up.

According to the Huntington Bank Backpack Index parents should prepare to spend $659 for elementary school students, $957 for middle school students and $1,498 for high school students.

Sgt. Matt Friedman works in San Francisco's Richmond district .

Recently he raised money to buy 40 children backpacks and school supplies.

"I think the job of police officers are to lift and raise people up every day... preparing kids for the first day of school is essential if they're going to be successful," he said.

He says he believes this effort is breaking down barriers and it's a really good community policing project.
