San Antonio Spurs 2008 Draft Preview

(Sports Network) - Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker are the nucleus of the San Antonio Spurs. They have won championships together and still have the fire and skill to battle the elite squads in the league.

Ginobili led the Spurs, who won more than 50 games for a ninth straight season, in scoring (19.5 ppg), while All-Star forward Duncan posted a team-best 11.3 rebounds per game and Parker handed out a club-high 6.0 assists per contest.

The 31-year-old Duncan was second on the team in scoring (19.3 ppg) and shot 49.7 percent from the floor. Parker collected 18.8 points per game and made 49.4 percent of his attempts from the field, including 25.8 percent from beyond the arc.

The Spurs will continue to go only as far as Duncan, Ginobili and Parker can take them. They do have a solid supporting cast, as defensive stoppers Ime Udoka and Bruce Bowen perform the dirty work and Michael Finley adds athleticism. Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto are serviceable in the middle. This is a veteran club that is built to win now.

San Antonio, which lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference finals, will not get a player who can help them get back to the championship round with the 26th pick in round one.

An inside presence who can rebound is what the Spurs should be looking for. They do have two second-round picks (45, 57) and may explore the possibility of moving up in the draft.

2007-08 Results: 56-26, lost to LA Lakers in Western Conference finals.

Key Player(s): Brent Barry (Guard), Matt Bonner (Forward), Bruce Bowen (Forward), Tim Duncan (Forward), Michael Finley (Forward/Guard), Manu Ginobili (Guard), Robert Horry (Forward), Fabricio Oberto (Center), Tony Parker (Guard), Kurt Thomas (Center), Ime Udoka (Forward).

Team Needs: Another rebounder

Draft picks: 1st round (26th overall), 2nd round (45th overall), 2nd round (57th overall).
