Authorities Seek Link In South SF Sexual Assaults

Authorities in South San Francisco warned female residents Monday of a suspected serial rapist who may be responsible for at least two recent attacks.

According to the Police Department, a male suspect began following a 20-year-old woman as she was walking behind the tennis courts in Orange Park around 1:45 p.m. Friday. The woman ignored the suspect when he tried to talk to her.

Police said the suspect then tried to push the victim to the ground, however, the woman managed to run away. The suspect chased the victim for a short distance but fled when the victim started screaming for help, according to police.

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man in his early- to mid-20s, standing about 5 feet 7 inches tall with an average build. Police said the suspect has a medium complexion, mustache and short, black hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki-colored pants.

The Police Department is investigating several similarities between Friday's assault, a rape that happened Wednesday and an attempted rape that also occurred in Orange Park on Sept. 17.

In an incident on Wednesday, a man stopped a 25-year-old woman as she walked near the intersection of South Linden Avenue and Dollar Avenue, forcing her into nearby bushes and raping her, according to police.

The suspect in Wednesday's rape is described as a Hispanic man between the ages of 25 and 30, standing about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 150 pounds. Police said he has brown eyes and black hair and spoke Spanish with a Mexican accent.

He was last seen wearing a dark green, long-sleeved, hooded sweatshirt with the word "Brooklyn" across the front and a serpent or dragon in the logo, according to police. When he attacked the woman he was wearing a white ski mask and smelled of alcohol. He did not appear to be a transient, police said.

The alleged rapist left the area on foot northbound, toward South Linden Avenue, police said.

Police were also comparing Friday's assault case and Wednesday's rape case to an attempted rape incident on Sept. 17 at a restroom in Orange Park.

In that incident, the victim was using the women's restroom near the Memorial Drive side of the park around 8 a.m. when a man opened the front door of the restroom and crawled under the stall door to reach the victim, according to police.

The victim resisted the suspect's attempts to cover her mouth and to restrain her and made her way outside the restroom. Once outside, she called the police on her cellular phone.

The man fled the area and was last seen running toward Orange Avenue, police reported.

The victim described the suspect as standing 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds and having short, black hair. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to police.

Anyone with information on these incidents is being urged to call the South San Francisco Police Department at (650) 877-8900 or (650) 952-2244.
