SAN FRANCISCO -- Moving in during the pre-dawn hours Wednesday, San Francisco police officers armed with warrants searched two homes in the Western Addition neighborhood -- the scene of a rash of weekend violence that left two men dead.Police officers were also very visible throughout the day in the neighborhood, stopping cars and questioning potential suspects."It (the searches) was done in response to the shootings that occurred in the Western Addition this weekend," said SFPD Sgt. Steve Mannina. "The police took a proactive step in serving two search warrants in the area -- to make the area safe, to bring the people responsible for the violence to justice."Although no arrests were made, Mannina said, important evidence in the shootings was seized.Over the weekend there were six shootings in the Western Addition, resulting in the death of two men, Tony McDougal, 33, and Anthony Hunter, 24. In the midst of the weekend's bloodshed, a 13-year-old girl was also shot in the back and another man received a life-threatening wound.Mannina said police have sent specialized officers and investigative units to supplement the patrols already working the neighborhood. The latest shooting occurred Monday just before 3 a.m. Police had first been alerted of a shooting at Hayes and Baker streets where they found broken glass and bullet casings. The victim -- identified as McDougal -- turned up more than 10 blocks away at the intersection of Haight and Fillmore streets in his car, which had crashed into a bus stop. A little less than an hour before at the same intersection where police found McDougal, a man sustained a "serious" gunshot wound to his stomach. He is recovering from that injury at General Hospital, according to police. Police are looking into a connection among the shootings, doing their best to assuage a community in turmoil. "I think four shootings in any area of the city in this short of a period is unusual," Mannina said. "But the Bayview and Western Addition have been experiencing more crime than most neighborhoods." This recent spate of violence first erupted at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday, when Hunter was shot multiple times while washing his van between two rows of subsidized housing in the city's Plaza East development on Eddy Street. The victim staggered a short distance toward Jefferson Square before collapsing. Two male suspects were seen running away from the shooting toward Geary Boulevard, Mannina said. At about 12:40 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a second shooting six blocks away from the first on Grove Street near Laguna Street, police reported. Two to three juveniles were on Grove Street, walking home from a trip to a corner store, when they exchanged words with three males in a passing car. One of the people got out of the car and shot at the juveniles, hitting a girl, according to police. The girl, who is 13, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital. She was expected to survive, Mannina said. The car, described as a gray two-door hatchback - either a Honda or a Toyota - was found on Larch Street, an alley half a block from the first shooting.
