San Jose State Students Consider A Name Change

Posted: 9:14 am PDT March 20, 2007Updated: 9:15 am PDT March 20, 2007

A proposal undergoing a vote to change the name of San Jose State University was getting a lukewarm reception on campus Tuesday with most students claiming to be happy with the current moniker.

The non-binding election -- asking that the university name be changed to CSU-San Jose -- will be the first vote by the student body on the issue although similar proposals have been rejected by the student body government over the last four years.

"It's gone through the student body (government) twice already," said SJS student Emilio Gonzales. "It hasn't gotten through to voting, but we've knocked it down twice in the past four years. I don't know why they are doing it again…I don't think the students will vote for it."

A non-scientific survey of students Tuesday morning found that Gonzales' opinion was shared by most.

"To me, San Jose State actually feels higher ranked because there are all kinds of CSU somethings," said student Justin Thompson of the 23-campus CSU system. "San Jose State gives it its own identity."

Fellow student Rabbia Kahan agreed.

"I kind of like the name," she told KTVU. "It stands out because…it tells people that there is a university in San Jose."

As does Lesley Oullette.

"I really like San Jose State University because it separates us from the other CSUs," she said. "It's such a long name to say -- CSUSJ. I say keep it."

San Jose State has gone through a few name changes in its 150 years including the currently proposed California State University -- San Jose. It was changed from that to San Jose State University in 1974, when the student population stood at 30,000.

Proponents of the name change claim calling it California State University -- San Jose would give the university more national muscle because of the clout of the California State University system.
