MERCED -- A freshman at the University of California, Merced, had a blood-alcohol level more than double the legal limit when he fell and bled to death on campus, said Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin. Hector Hugo Barrera-Barraza, 18, of Moorpark had spent the night drinking with friends off campus before returning to the dorms and continuing to drink last weekend. The engineering student had a blood-alcohol content of .20 percent at the time of his death. The legal limit in California for those age 21 and older is .08 percent, Pazin said Thursday. Fellow students found Barrera-Barraza on Saturday morning, hours after he fell, cut his head open on the concrete and lost consciousness. Campus police still were investigating people who may have served Barrera-Barraza alcohol, said Chief Rita Spaur.
