Alcohol Death At Frat House Spurs Lawsuit

FRESNO -- The family of a student who died at a fraternity house after a weekend of drinking sued California State University, Fresno, and the fraternity for wrongful death. Danny Ray Daniels, 19, was found dead in his bed at the Phi Gamma Delta house last year. He had a blood-alcohol level four times the legal limit at the time of his death, according to a coroner's report. Parents Cassandra Daniels and Danny Daniels filed the wrongful death lawsuit in Fresno County Superior Court on Friday. They seek unspecified compensation. The parents claim their son was induced or forced to drink "massive quantities of alcohol" as part of fraternity hazing. Months earlier, he had gotten drunk and fell out of an upper-story window at the fraternity house, the lawsuit claims. The Daniels' charge Fresno State with not doing enough to prevent hazing and drinking at fraternities. The university banned Phi Gamma Delta for five years after the school's investigation into the incident. Fresno State officials said the university could not immediately comment because they hadn't seen a copy of the lawsuit. A phone call to Phi Gamma Delta's Kentucky-based headquarters was not immediately returned.
