13 San Jose residents displaced after fire

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - There were some scary moments for more than a dozen people who escaped a house fire Tuesday morning in San Jose.

The damage was contained to the garage, but firefighters say the building is structurally unstable so they don't want any of the 13 people who were living there to go inside.

The family who lives in the home woke up to the smell of smoke and the sound of smoke alarms going off at around 5:15 am.

They quickly rounded everyone up and escaped the home.

Everyone got out safely, including their three dogs.

Firefighters arrived and found the garage on fire. They worked quickly to extinguish the flames.

Fire officials tell KTVU the electrical box in the garage is charred, and a shrine with incense was right next to it.

At this point, they say the fire was accidental.

The fire was contained to the garage, so a fire captain says he believes the house will be livable but not as of now because there is most likely smoke and water damage inside.

The Red Cross is working on getting the family shelter.
