SAN FRANCISCO -- A U.S. Coast Guard crew was called to airlift the body of a man found dead at San Francisco's Baker Beach Tuesday, a Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman said. Two beachgoers reported finding the man unresponsive on the beach at around 3:11 p.m., GGNRA spokeswoman Ozola Cody said. A National Park Service crew was initially dispatched to recover the body with a zodiac, an inflatable buoyant apparatus, but due to high winds and rough surf at Baker Beach Tuesday afternoon, the Coast Guard was called to recover the body by lowering a stretcher down to crews on the beach, Cody said. The body was successfully recovered at around 5:30 p.m. Cody said the man was found very close to an area of hard, slippery sedimentary rock known as chert, which is located at the far north end of Baker Beach. A Coast Guard dispatcher previously said that at around 3 p.m. emergency crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and Presidio Fire Department were involved in the rescue of a man who apparently fell into a rock crevice located at the base of Fort Crosby. The man's death is being investigated by the San Francisco medical examiner's office, Cody said.
