OAKLAND -- Officials identified a woman Wednesday who was unable to escape the path of an Amtrak train after she apparently stepped across the tracks at Jack London Square Station. The Alameda County coroner's bureau has identified the woman as Lucie Buchbinder, 83, of Oakland. Warning gates that alert drivers and pedestrians of an oncoming train were reportedly lowered at the time that Buchbinder was fatally struck, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero. The accident occurred at around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday after Buchbinder reportedly crossed over the tracks with another group of pedestrians, Romero said. Buchbinder was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the coroner's bureau. Four people were riding in the train at the time of the collision, but no other injuries were reported, Romero said.
