Posted: 8:41 am PDT July 13, 2007Updated: 8:47 am PDT July 13, 2007

A man was gunned down as he rode his bicycle along a quiet Oakland street early Friday -- the city's fifth homicide in the last 48 hours and the 64th of the year.

Lt. Lawrence Green said the latest slaying had all the appearances of a drive-by slaying.

"From the scene, it looks like someone drove by and shot the guy off the bike," he told KTVU.

Green said the latest fatal shooting took place around 3 a.m. with officers responding to reports of shots fired and man down in the 1900 block of 85th Avenue. A man in his 20s was found on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound -- his bike lay beside him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police spokesman Roland Holmgren, the first homicide occurred about 12:08 p.m. Wednesday, when officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the 600 block of West Grand Avenue.

Holmgren said officers found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds and emergency medical personnel took her to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she died.

He said the second homicide took place at about 4:19 p.m. Wednesday, when officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2100 block of West Street to investigate a call that someone may have died.

Officers found a dead man inside a vacant house and determined that the victim had suffered gunshot wounds, according to Holmgren.

Holmgren said the third homicide occurred at about 3:18 a.m. Thursday, when officers were dispatched to reports of gunshots in the area of 62nd Street and San Pablo Avenue and found a man suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced the victim dead on the scene, which is in front of a Golden Gate Elementary School playground, he said.

According to a police dispatcher, the fourth homicide occurred Thursday around 9:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of E. 19th Street. One victim was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
