OAKLAND -- A moderate 4.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the East Bay early Friday, awakening residents, sending goods spilling from store shelves and triggering a power blackout in Oakland’s Jack London Square area. The magnitude earthquake struck at about 4:40 a.m. about 2 miles east of Oakland, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor was felt on both sides of the San Francisco Bay and lasted up to 10 seconds. Residents east of San Francisco were shaken awake as pictures slipped from walls and objects tumbled.Alex Sieu, the owner of the Dream Fluff donut shop, was cooking up bake goods in the kitchen of his store on the Oakland-Berkeley border when the quake struck. The building shook for about 10 seconds and his front window went crashing into the street."I was cooking and suddenly it was just shaking," he said. "I turned around and everything was breaking apart…I realized it was an earthquake, but I didn't know what to do."Ken McKee, who also stopped by the Dream Fluff, with his dog, Fred, said he was sleeping when his bed suddenly started to shake."I was dreaming I was driving," he said. "I thought I was having a trouble with my car."Berkeley police say they got at least 25 calls from businesses reporting some minor damage or triggered alarms.Near Sieu's shop a Safeway market on Shattuck Ave. had five windows shattered. Fortunately, the store was closed at the time. Fire officials declared the building a hazard because of the windows and ordered the store to remain closed. The earthquake was relatively minor, but it was widely felt because it was centered in a heavily populated area on the north segment of the Hayward fault. "There was a real directional component to it that put a lot of the strong shaking in Berkeley and north Oakland," said USGS seismologist Steve Walter.Meanwhile, the hardest hit area was Montclair near the epicenter. The fault line literally runs through Joe Sullivan's book store. The quake spilled hundreds of books from the shelves."This damage is worst than Loma Prieta," he said, referring to the October 1989 quake that left scores dead and hundreds injured. "We got extensive damage to the book store."The crack outside Sullivan's store was widened by Friday's quake. On the street, longtime resident Glenn Millstone said the quake felt different than others."It felt like the house was hit by a truck," he told KTVU. "It was completely different than any other earthquake I ever felt. The others have felt like you're roilling on wavt water. This felt like getting hit by a truck."Up the street at the A.G. Ferrari Foods store, the floor was littered with broken wine bottles. At an Oakland fastfood outlet, Don White was surprised the quake was not larger than a 4.2."It was a pretty good shake," White told KTVU. "It was the largest shake we have had for a while."The quake had an epicenter about 2 miles north-northeast of Oakland near the Hayward fault. The temblor was felt on both sides of the San Francisco Bay and was reported as lasting up to 10 seconds.Authorities said the quake may have triggered a transformer fire on Oak Street in Oakland darkening several blocks in the nearby Jack London Square neighborhood.Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman David Eisenhower said that around 1,400 customers had lost their power in 20 separate outages. The majority of the outages occurred in the Oakland area. Crews were able to reconnect the vast majority of the outages by 8:30 a.m.While there was damage from the shaker, authorities said no injuries have been reported. An online survey filled out by area residents on the U.S. Geological Survey's web site indicated the quake was felt as far as Napa. This was the most intense earthquake to hit the state since a 4.3 magnitude temblor hit near Aromas, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, on July 2.
