Richmond Police Probe Possible Connections In Weekend Violence

Posted: 10:31 am PDT August 25, 2007Updated: 6:40 pm PDT August 27, 2007

Richmond police are looking into possible connections between some of the incidents of violence this weekend that left two men dead, one severely beaten and sent six others to the hospital with gunshot wounds, Lt. Shawn Pickett said.

Police are following leads in an effort to determine whether a Friday night robbery and shooting was connected to the early morning murder of a homeless man less than a mile away, Pickett said.

"There are some similarities in some of the actions that the suspects did that could be related to the homicide," Pickett said.

Pickett noted that both of the victims were Hispanic males and both were shot during the course of a robbery.

Lt. Mark Gagan said that a third robbery, which occurred in the same location as the homicide, and again with a homeless victim, might also be connected.

The first robbery took place Friday at 10:18 p.m. Two suspects, one of which had a handgun, confronted a man in the driveway of a residence in the 200 block of Willard Avenue and demanded money, according to Richmond police Lt. Michael Booker.

Police said the victim tried to escape by running into the residence, but was shot in the abdomen. He was taken by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center where his is listed in stable condition, Booker said.

Then at about 5:50 a.m. Saturday Oscar Alejandre, a 42-year-old homeless man, was robbed and fatally shot less than a mile away.

Police found Alejandre suffering from multiple gunshot wounds a few hundred yards south of Chesley Avenue under the railroad tracks. The area is near an abandoned warehouse, located at 1200 Chesley Ave., which is used as a homeless encampment, Pickett said.

The third possibly connected robbery occurred at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, also near 1200 Chesley Ave., under the railroad tracks, Richmond police Lt. Mike Gormley said.

The victim was shot while trying to run away and his attackers stole some money and beer from him, Gormley said.

Police caught up to the victim a short distance away in the 1500 block of Rumrill Boulevard, Gormley said.

Gagan said that investigators were waiting to see whether evidence sent to the county crime lab would link the two Chesley Avenue incidents.

So far, the other shootings appear to be separate incidents, Gagan said.

One occurred at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday when a fight broke out at a party in the 600 block of Seventh Street and an unknown suspect reportedly fired shots into the crowd.

Police responded to a report of the shooting and found a male victim who had been severely beaten, Pickett said. A second victim from the same party showed up at Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center a short time later suffering from a gunshot wound to his forearm, Pickett said. The victim, an 18-year-old male, was in stable condition.

About two hours later, officers responded to the 600 block of Fifth Street and found a man with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and hand. Booker said it seems the man was driving his vehicle southbound on Seventh Street when his rear window was shattered and he was struck. The victim continued driving to the 500 block of Ripley Avenue where his car stopped running, Booker said. The victim then got out and walked until police found him. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center and is expected to survive.

At about 9 a.m. Saturday police responded to a report of a body lying on the street in the 600 block of 13th Street. The Contra Costa County coroner's office will be conducting an autopsy today to determine how the man died. In the meantime, Pickett said police were investigating it as a suspicious death.

"We haven't been able to rule anything out yet," Pickett said.

The coroner has identified the victim as 33-year-old Juan Ramos, a San Francisco resident.

Saturday night a third party produced two more victims, although one is a suspect as well, Gormley said.

At about 10:10 p.m., a 17-year-old boy allegedly fired his gun by accident and shot his own leg, as well as the leg of a 13-year-old friend, Gormley said. The teens had been at a house party in the 900 block of 45th Street, according to Gormley. Both boys were transported to Kaiser Permanente's Richmond Medical Center.

Pickett said police were also looking into possible connections between this weekend's violence and the series of shootings that occurred last week, three on Tuesday and four on Wednesday, but so far no suspects in any of the shootings have been named or arrested.
