Intense 4-Alarm Blaze Destroys SJ Warehouse

Posted: 9:08 am PDT August 26, 2007Updated: 9:20 am PDT August 26, 2007

Firefighters finally wrestled control early Sunday of a four-alarm blaze that destroyed a San Jose warehouse and sent flame soaring skyward into the predawn darkness.

San Jose fire Capt. Craig Schwinge said the fire, which broke out at 1060 N. Fifth St., was first reported at 12:39 a.m. and jumped to four alarms at 1:14 a.m.

The fire was finally controlled by 3:40 a.m.

Schwinge said the warehouse is home to So-Lite, Corp., a lightweight roof tile manufacturer. The contents of the building appear to be a complete loss, but the cement structure remained standing.

"Initially there were reports of small explosions from the propane cylinders or tanks," Schwinge said.

He said there was no damage to neighboring warehouses but some cars adjacent to the building were impacted.

Authorities said no injuries were reported.
