Three Injured In Car Chase And Crash

SAN FRANCISCO -- A high-speed chase of a possible stolen car from Marin to San Francisco counties ended early Monday in a crash sent three people to the hospital, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Dutra. The incident began around 3:30 a.m. near Marin City when a Marin Sheriff's Office patrol car attempted to pull over a two-door Toyota car for a mechanical issue. However, Dutra said, as soon as the officer turned on the flashing red lights the Toyota sped away. The chase headed south across the Golden Gate Bridge, reaching speeds of 75 mph, and CHP officers were informed of the pursuit. The Toyota exited on the Doyle Drive ramp, but when he attempted to turn onto Lombard Street he lost control, hit the outside wall of the curve and flipped the car. The car rolled onto its top and slid for about 100 yards before it came to a rest, Dutra said. Three people were removed from the car and were taken to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver has been charged with driving under the influence after officers found an open, empty fifth of Hennessey cognac on the floor boards of the drivers seat, Dutra said. The Toyota had current registration stickers, Dutra said, but the plates did not match the car, and it may be an unreported stolen vehicle. The incident is still under investigation, Dutra said.
