Schoolteacher May Face Hefty Wildfire Fighting Bill

Updated: 9:24 am PDT September 27, 2007

A Central Coast schoolteacher was charged Wednesday with one misdemeanor count for igniting the massive Lick Wildfire that consumed 47,760 acres of Santa Clara County wilderness and may be ordered to pay a portion of the more than $9 million price tag for battling the blaze.

Supervising Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Frank Carrubba said Margaret Pavese, 50, a San Juan Bautista teacher wasn't facing felony arson charges because authorities determined she did not intend to start the fire.

Pavese allegedly was burning trash in an illegal burn barrel on her property east of Morgan Hill when sparks ignited nearby dry grasses. The blaze quickly whipped into a massive wildfire, charring about one-third of the Henry Coe State Park -- state's second largest park.

It burned out of control for more than a week and was battled by more than 1,700 firefighters and a fleet of air tankers including the state's costly DC-10 supertanker. Ten firefighters were injured fighting the blaze while flames destroyed four residential units and 11 outbuildings.

Pavese faces six months in prison and a $1,000 fine. A judge could also require her to pick up a portion of the bill for fighting the fire, Carrubba said.
