Bomb Threat Shuts Down Oakland International Airport

Posted: 1:43 pm PDT October 8, 2007Updated: 9:39 pm PDT October 8, 2007

A bomb threat shut down the busy Southwest Terminal at Oakland International Airport Monday for more than an hour, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of passengers and causing flight delays before the facility was reopened.

Alameda County Sheriff's Department Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the airport received three calls containing threats around 1 p.m.

Port of Oakland spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur said the calls were a specific threat against Southwest Airlines Flight 337 -- a flight from Oakland to Chicago Midway Airport.

The flight was searched and no devices were discovered. Baggage was removed from the plane to a runway area where the bags were lined up on the ground and dogs searched them.

Authorities closed all roads leading into the airport complex -- the West Coast hub for Southwest -- and passengers were hustle out into the parking lot.

Terminal 1 was reopened around 2 p.m. and Terminal 2 was reopened at 2:10 p.m.
