OAKLAND -- Oakland police say clues found on the MySpace.com Web site helped lead to the arrest a 19-year old man accused in the senseless Oct. 13th killing of San Leandro High School football player Greg "Doody" Ballard, Jr.Soon after the killing, Oakland police had a street name of a suspect. With information from MySpace.com, they were quickly able to put a face to that name.Officers brought the suspect to police headquarters where detectives say he confessed. But it was the reason he gave for the killing that completely shocked investigators.Police say 19-year-old Dwayne Stancill didn't have a reason -- couldn't give a reason -- for killing the popular San Leandro High School football player."There was no argument. There were no harsh words. There was no … anything that would normally provoke a violent response from someone from what we typically see," explained Oakland Police Sergeant. Tony Jones. "He told us he just shot him."Sergeant Jones says during questioning Stancill told him he was drunk on the night of October 13th and that after the shooting, he couldn't believe what he had done.Police had heard a man by the name of "Weezie," a member of a violent East Oakland street gang, was behind the murder.Investigators found a page devoted to the "Hyfee Boyz" gang on MySpace.com."The name of that gang had come up several times in different cases, all violent cases. All cases involving shootings and things of that nature," said Sergeant Jones. "He was on that gang's website."Stancill's arrest comes on the same day students at San Leandro High School gathered for a special ceremony in memory of their slain friend, known affectionately as "Doody."Among the tributes were poems read by fellow varsity football players. Ballard's mother and brother listened as one player wrote of the senselessness of the crime."This young man had plans. He was going to change his life, but the past left a grudge against him. So he lays down. He lays down for the world's insanity. Why couldn't the world just let him be?" read Eric Brown.Investigators believe they would have eventually caught Ballard's killer, but say MySpace helped them take the killer off the streets a whole lot quicker.Sergeant Jones says the Ballard family is relieved that Stancill is behind bars. But like him, they just don't understand the violence."I think it is sad that a life is lost. Basically two lives are lost. All of these families are turned upside down and this kid's reason for doing it is … there isn't one. He didn't have a reason."
