PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Angry after a fight with his girlfriend, Palo Alto abduction-sexual assault suspect Todd David Burpee Jr. went looking for anyone to physically beat to vent his frustrations. Then he saw his target -- a 17-year-old girl riding her bike home from school.Burpee, 20, made his first court appearance on Tuesday and the details of his chilling confession to police were released. He told police he wanted to hurt someone -- anyone -- following the fight over his losing his job."It could have been anyone," he told police in the documents. "It could have been a guy. I was just mad."Burpee told police he saw the girl riding her bike home from Henry M. Gunn High School while cruising through his old neighborhood looking for a convenient victim. The girl, thinking he was a local resident, let him followed her into a common area of an apartment complex. It was then that the brutal attack began. Burpee told police he bashed her head against the pavement and then dragged the semi-conscious girl to his car where he sexually assaulted her.He fled the area with the injured and bleeding girl in his car stopping at a gas station. The girl told investigators she tried to call 911 on her cell phone while Burpee was at the pump, but that the call failed. She did manage to slip away later.Around 4:10 p.m. on Oct. 30 Fred Burgener had stopped at a red light near the 500 block of North Fair Oaks Boulevard in Sunnyvale when he saw the girl running toward him and got out of his car. "I made eye contact and asked if she was being chased," Burgener said. "Her emotional state was the issue, she was bleeding from the mouth."The Asian girl was able to convey her name and a brief description of her attacker but language was a problem, Burgener said. Burgener called 911 but was only able to get in touch with police once he reached his mother-in-law's home and had her dial from a landline.Burpee was arrested later that week as he waited in line at a San Jose fast food restaurant, according to Palo Alto police Chief Lynne Johnson. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of sexual assault, attempted murder and kidnapping.
