Sacramento County Imposes Limits On Wood Burning Fires

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento County residents must check air quality listings before lighting a fire over the next four months. The new rules on wood fires go into effect Saturday as part of the county's effort to meet federal air pollution standards. Residents can't burn wood indoors or outdoors when air pollution is moderately to dangerously high. The toxic fine particles from wood fires lodge in the airways of people's lungs and has been linked to respiratory problems, bronchitis, irregular heartbeat and heart attacks. The rules don't apply to gas, propane and electric fireplaces, barbecues and other cooking devices. Homes that use wood fires as its sole heating source are also exempt.
