Recovered Body ID'ed As Missing Crab Fisherman

Posted: 3:01 pm PST December 12, 2007Updated: 4:01 pm PST December 12, 2007

The body of a man found on a Half Moon Bay beach Tuesday afternoon has been identified as missing fisherman Benjamin Hannaberg, the San Mateo County coroner's office said Wednesday.

The 58-year-old San Leandro resident went missing Dec. 4 with 59-year-old Jim Davis, also of San Leandro. The two men left Pillar Point at 9 a.m. to go crab fishing.

After reports that the boat, the Good Guys, was missing, land and air search crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office launched a daylong search over a 500-square-mile area for the men and their vessel. They only found debris.

Coroner Robert Foucrault said the cause of death is not yet being released, which he said is typical of this type of investigation.

It will be difficult to determine exactly what happened, Foucrault said, because "we don't have the boat."

"There was obviously a boating mishap," he added.

There has been no sign of Davis since the vessel went missing.
