Violence Mars SF New Year's Celebrations

Posted: 10:08 am PST January 1, 2008

One person was killed, two others stabbed and 25 people were arrested for being drunk in public on a New Year's night that San Francisco police described as "relatively calm and peaceful."

Authorities said a man was gunned down at about 4:50 a.m. in the 300 block of Ninth Street. No other details have been released and no suspects have been taken into custody, according to officials.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Steve Mannina said the largest reported crowd of people in the city gathered to watch a fireworks display at the Embarcadero from midnight to 12:15 a.m. A melee broke out near the Port-o-Potties and two men were arrested.

Mannina said the two stabbing incidents were considered "not too severe" and were reported around 2 a.m. in the Washington Square area of the city's North Beach neighborhood.

One person was arrested for possession of a firearm at Drumm and Market streets in the city's Financial District after a witness spotted the suspect with a gun and notified police officers standing close by, according to Mannina.

A road rage incident in the city's Mission District led to a firearm arrest as well.

Twenty-five people were arrested for being drunk in public throughout the city's North Beach, Marina, Russian Hill and Tenderloin neighborhoods, the Mission District and the Embarcadero, according to Mannina.
