San Jose Investigating Vote On "Little Saigon" District

SAN JOSE -- San Jose's city attorney is expected to report to a City Council committee on Wednesday whether the controversial vote on naming the city's "Saigon Business District" violated state open meeting laws, a spokeswoman for Mayor Chuck Reed said Friday. In November, the City Council voted 8-3 to name the stretch of Story Road between U.S. 101 and Senter Road the "Saigon Business District" despite vocal opposition from large numbers of the city's Vietnamese community who want the area to be named "Little Saigon." Opponents of the council-approved name have vowed to launch a recall effort against Councilwoman Madison Nguyen, the city's first council member of Vietnamese dissent, over her support of the "Saigon Business District" name. On Wednesday, Councilman Forrest Williams admitted in an interview with San Jose-based Vietnam Television that he had promised Nguyen that he would support the "Saigon Business District" name before the council voted, a potential violation of state law. San Jose City Attorney Rick Doyle is investigating the circumstances surrounding the vote and is scheduled to report his findings to the council's rules committee Wednesday. Reed will not be commenting until then, according to his spokeswoman Michelle McGurk. "We are going to look forward to the report from the city attorney," McGurk said. The council could have to revote on the area's name if Doyle finds that open meeting laws were violated.
