FREMONT -- A second victim shot at a wedding reception attended by members of two rival gangs in Fremont Saturday night is expected to survive his injuries, Fremont police Sgt. Chris Mazzone said Monday. The unnamed victim was shot in the stomach, along with Francisco Sanchez, a 35-year-old Livermore resident who sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to Mazzone. The incident, now believed to be gang related, took place at a wedding reception at a banquet hall at 37270 Niles Blvd. near the Sullivan Underpass at about 8:50 p.m., according to police. Mazzone said the wedding hosted almost 300 people, some of whom were members of two rival gangs, the Nortenos and the Surenos. "There were people from two rival gangs at the wedding, a scuffle broke out and someone began shooting," Mazzone said. Fremont police arrested a carload of Norteno gang members after the shooting, but they were arrested on various warrant charges, unrelated to the murder, Mazzone said. Police received multiple calls reporting the incident and a call from the owner of the banquet hall indicated to police that both victims were near the hall's front door. The banquet hall, located in a quiet section of the city known as the Niles District, is routinely rented for functions. Mazzone said he considered is "well established in town, we've had no problems there." Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Fremont police at (510) 790-6800.
