OAKLAND, Calif. -- A dramatic police chase early Monday ended with a stolen car suspect being cornered and arrested in the backyard of an Oakland retirement community as elderly residents directed officers to his location.Oakland police Sgt. Millington told KTVU that the pursuit began when officers attempted to pull over a suspected stolen car."Officers observed a vehicle listed on the hot sheet and attempted a vehicle stop, but the suspect fled," he said. "He was pursued at moderate speeds on surface streets and eventually went on the freeway and lost control and crashed on Harrison."The suspect and his passenger attempted to flee. The passenger -- wanted on a warrant out of Stockton -- was captured immediately but the suspect fled into a wooded area."We locked down the perimeter of the area and began search," Millington said.Residents of the nearby Grand Lake Garden Retirement community in 400 block of Santa Clara Ave. began calling 911 with reports that the suspect had run into the facility's backyard. Aided by a police dog, officers cornered the suspect and eventually took him into custody."Citizens did a great job calling in, helping to direct us to the last known location of suspect," Millington said. The suspect was taken to the hospital with an injured hand.
