UC Allows Tree-Sitters To Get Food And Water

Updated: 10:04 am PDT June 23, 2008

After several days of tension and arrests, University of California, Berkeley officials have agreed to allow supporters to resupply a group of protesters living in the branches of an on-campus oak grove that is tagged for removal.

The protestors have been living in the trees since a UC Board of Regents committee voted 18 months ago to approve a project that calls for tearing down the trees so the university can build a new sports training center next to the football stadium.

The agreement to allow food and water to be given to the tree-sitters was brokered over the weekend between Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor Nathan Brostrom, according to Berkeley Councilmember Laurie Capitellii, who annonced the deal while standing at the fence surrounding the grove on Sunday.

"The university has indicated they are not going to allow the tree sitters to go without needed water and food," Capitelli said. "How they get it to them has not been worked out."

University police passed medical supplies to the tree-sitters via a rope on Sunday after several tree-sitters said they had cuts that were getting infected. Police did not give any food or water to the tree-sitters, according to Capitelli.

"The next step is probably to try and figure out what the tree sitters need in terms of supplies and how we're going to get them up to them," Capitelli said.

The atmosphere near the trees was "pretty calm" on Sunday, according to Capitelli. Around 30 people, some protestors who don't want the oak trees to be cut down and others spectators, were gathered in the street at about 5 p.m.

Three protestors were arrested at the UC Berkeley campus last week while university police attempted to dismantle the tree-sitters' infrastructure, according to UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof.

"I just want us to find a way to get those folks out of the tree safely and without harm," Capitelli said.
