Castro Valley Police Pursuit Ends In Horrific Crash

Posted: 12:01 pm PST February 26, 2008

A high-speed police pursuit overnight in the East Bay ended in a frightening crash that transformed two vehicles into piles of twisted metal and left the fleeing driver with a badly injured arm.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Sal Suarez said the incident began around 11 p.m. when Dublin police attempted to make a traffic stop on a sedan. The driver, who was wanted on unspecified traffic violations, fled instead of pulling over.

The chase -- reaching speeds of more than 80 mph -- moved from city streets onto Highway 580 where the CHP was preparing to join the pursuit at the time of the crash.

The sedan slammed into a BMW Roadster.

"After the impact, the vehicle did roll and ended up on its roof," Suarez said. "The driver was attempting to self-extricate when he was taken into custody…He suffered a serious arm injury, but it (his arm) was intact."

The driver was taken to Eden Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the BMW -- a woman from Texas -- suffered minor injuries.

The incident remained under investigation.
