UNION CITY -- A 16-year-old boy was arrested Monday afternoon for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 24-year-old Hayward man Friday night in Union City, police announced Tuesday. The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Charles F. Kennedy Park, at 12th and J streets. Juan Carlos Gomez was sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle alongside passenger Daniel Donate, 20, of Hayward, when a group of four to six people approached them, according to police. Gomez was fatally shot in what police called a "gang-related robbery." He attempted to get away by driving through the park, but crashed into a parked vehicle on 12th Street. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene. He is survived by a brother, with whom he lived, and his mother who lives in Mexico, police said. Donate sustained two gunshot wounds and was taken to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition, according to police. At about 4:15 p.m. Monday, police spotted the teenage suspect riding as a passenger in a vehicle. Detectives stopped the vehicle at Whipple Road and Sixth Street and took the suspect into custody without incident, police said. The suspect, whose name is not being released due to his age, was booked into Alameda County Juvenile Hall on charges of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. The investigation is ongoing and police are continuing an effort to identify additional subjects involved in the crime. Anyone with information regarding the shooting may call Detective Mike Ward and Detective Steven Cesaretti at (510) 471-1365.
