Napa Teen Struck By Car Still Critical

POSTED: 1:44 pm PST March 4, 2008

A 17-year-old boy who was struck by a car while riding his bike in Napa Saturday remains in critical condition Tuesday at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Napa police identified the boy as Jose Carlos Ortiz. Police said he suffered a head injury and was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center then to Memorial Hospital.

Armando Hurtado, 44, of St. Helena, the driver of the 2000 Nissan truck that struck the teen, was scheduled to appear in Napa County Superior Court this afternoon. Police arrested him for two counts of felony hit-and-run with injury, misdemeanor resisting arrest and a violation of probation.

Police said Hurtado was driving north in the 3100 block of Jefferson Street around 10:23 a.m. Saturday when he struck Ortiz who was riding his bicycle westbound in the marked crosswalk along Pueblo Avenue.

Hurtado fled north on Jefferson Street, crossed over into the southbound lanes and collided with a southbound 1992 Toyota SUV, according to police. The driver, Joseph G. Torres, 55, of Yountville, suffered moderate injuries and was treated at Queen of the Valley Medical Center and released.

Hurtado fled that accident scene and when his Nissan truck became disabled, he was detained by witnesses until emergency responders arrived, police said. Hurtado then physically challenged witnesses and confronted police and fire personnel before he was handcuffed and arrested, police said.

Hurtado is a licensed driver and was not under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, police said.
