San Rafael Shooting-Carjacking Suspects Arrested After Chase

POSTED: 2:25 pm PST March 4, 2008

An Oakland couple was arrested after a police pursuit in Solano County for a carjacking and shooting in San Rafael last month, police said Tuesday.

San Rafael Police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said the suspects, Clayton Lee Winfrey Jr., 40 and Jennifer Leigh Prince, 37, were spotted in a blue 1998 Acura Integra in San Pablo late Monday afternoon.

When a Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy tried to stop the Acura on San Pablo Dam Road in western Contra Costa County, Winfrey fled east on Interstate Highway 80, Rohrbacher said.

The California Highway Patrol took up the chase, which ended when Winfrey ran the Acura off the road near Lagoon Valley Park in Vacaville, Rohrbacher said. Winfrey ran but was caught by a Vacaville police officer and his dog. He and Prince were taken into custody.

They are suspected of shooting a 25-year-old San Rafael man in the leg and carjacking his 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup in the parking lot of the Travelodge on East Francisco Boulevard on Feb. 13.

Winfrey was booked in the Marin County jail for kidnapping, carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm causing great bodily injury, use of a firearm during commission of a felony and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $500,000.

Prince was booked for kidnapping, carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, identity theft and violation of parole. She is being held under no bail. Both are to appear in Marin County Superior Court Wednesday.
